SHOCK

The Shock was actually described in a letter as . . . ‘a “thing” with a donkey’s head and a smooth velvet hide’ This from a man who had seen one and hoped to go back and shoot it. However, when several men tried to seize it, the creature simply bit someone’s hand and vanished. That MUST have been a shock!

SILKY

Appearance; Always female, and always dressed in silk.

Location; The English/Scottish borders

A little like a Banshee, the Silky lives in peoples’ houses and is probably heard before she is ever seen, since she is always accompanied by the sound of her long, rustling silk skirts. Inclined to be territorial and an incredibly efficient housekeeper, mortal servants live in fear of the Silky. There’s an account of one particularly well-known Silky, who, as well as tidying up anything that required it, used to throw things around as well, presumably to make work for the other servants. And there’s another Silky who, as well as doing all the work around the huge house in which she lived, also set herself the task of guarding it. She could discern between friend and foe, and would let the former through (although generally this resulted in the poor horse being terrified)) but woe betide any unwelcome visitor, since the Silky would simply kill him!
